Cataclysm shatters PC sales records

PC MMO title World of Warcraft: Cataclysm sold 3.3m copies in its first 24 hours on sale, developer Blizzard has announced.

The company says the numbers make it the best selling PC title of all time. Previous WoW release Wrath of the Lich King sold 2.8m copies in its first day on sale in 2008.

We had to bring Azeroth to the brink of destruction in Cataclysm, but the result was our best expansion yet,” Blizzard CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime stated.

We want to thank all of our new, existing, and returning players throughout the world for their incredible enthusiasm and support, and we look forward to hearing what they think about all the new content.”

Interestingly, the game didn’t capture the top spot in the UKIE GfK Chart-Track Top 40 this week, though it was noted that it’s the first time a WoW title has been released simultaneously both digitally and at retail.

Blizzard has not revealed the sale split between downloads and physical copies.
