China to police any new console market

The sale of games consoles may have green lit in China, but the market will still be heavily regulated.

That’s according to Bloomberg which says that China’s Ministry of Culture will be responsible for drafting new rules on video-game consoles” following the lifting of the 14-year old ban on their sale in the country last week.

However, as you might expect from a country steeped as heavily in regulation and censorship as China, any potential entrants to this new market will have to conform to a strict set of cultural measures.

Things that are hostile to China, or not in conformity with the outlook of China’s government, won’t be allowed,” Ministry of Culture head Cai Wu stated. We want to open the window a crack to get some fresh air, but we still need a screen to block the flies and mosquitoes.”

Both Sony and Nintendo have already welcomed the chance to bring their products to Chinese gamers, with the latter seeing its share price climb in light of the news.
