Cloud storage coming to PS3?

Sony could be the first to bring cloud gaming features to home consoles if the latest rumours are to be believed.

Kotaku is reporting that the platform holder will introduce a new feature called Online Saving, which will allow PS3 users to save their game data remotely to a server rather than their hard drive. This would enable it to be accessed from other devices – such as the NGP, for example.

The new feature will reportedly be introduced with the upcoming 3.60 firmware update for the PS3, and will only be made available to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Sony has also affirmed that developers will be able to opt out and prevent their games from using Online Saving if they so choose.

Sony originally showed interest in cloud technology in 2009 when it trademarked the name ‘PS Cloud‘, but has since revealed nothing about potential uses.
