Currys paying out on Lampard goal

Big box electricals retailer Currys has told customers that will recognise Frank Lampard’s controversial World Cup goal against Germany that was ruled out by the referee, robbing England of certain victory in Bloemfontein last Saturday.

The chain had offered all customers who spent £599 or more on an HD TV in the build-up to the World Cup £10 back on each goal scored by England in the finals.

Seeing as Lampard’s strike would have been only England’s fourth goal of the tournament, following Gerrard’s effort just four minutes into their opening match against the USA, Defoe's against Slovenia and Upson’s header against the Germans, the retailer is still getting off very lightly.

“Like every other England fan, and pretty much every person around the world who watched the match, we believe that Frank Lampard scored a legitimate goal on Sunday,” marketing director Niall O'Keeffe stated.

“We promised our customers £10 back for every goal the team scored in the World Cup and we stand by that so we're officially recognising it and will be giving all eligible customers a free £10 gift voucher for the goal that got away.

“England may have got the red card – but our customers will get a gift card. Although it's no consolation for an early World Cup exit we'd like to give a bit back to the fans who've had so little to cheer about over the last couple of weeks.”
