D3P bypasses UMD in favour of downloads

Publisher D3P has announced that it is to bring a number of its existing PSP titles to Sony’s PlayStation Network – a move that could be seen as a snub to the handheld’s UMD format.

Gamers will be able to download the PSP titles via Sony’s PSN on either PS3 or PC, and subsequently move them over to their handheld’s memory card where they can be played without the need for a UMD disc.

D3Publisher is always looking to make fun and original gaming experiences easily accessible to everyone,” D3P’s North American and European president and chief executive officer Yoji Takenaka stated. We believe that making these classic PSP titles available via digital distribution gives the games a new opportunity for discovery and the gamers a second chance at hours of enjoyment.”

The titles to be included in the move are Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, Cube, Practical IQ, Dead Head Fred, Beta Bloc and Super Pocket Tennis.
