Cherished comic publisher DC will this summer wipe the slate clean for the entirety of its fictional superhero universe.
USA Today reports that later this year DC will re-number its entire catalogue, effectively allowing itself to start over with key IP such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Green Lantern.
The first book to be published under its new guise will be Justice League No.1 in late August. A further 51 first issues are planned for September.
Writer Geoff Johns says that the publisher intends to explore the human aspects of its classic characters. "This was a chance to start, not at the beginning, but at a point where our characters are younger and the stories are being told for today’s audience," co-publisher Dan DiDio added.
Interestingly, DC has also pledged to release its titles digitally via its website and apps on the same day they arrive in shops.
The move also paves the way for a fresh spate of video games offerings. The DC licence currently enjoys agreements with a number of studios including SOE (DC Universe Online) and Warner (Batman: Arkham City).
It could also point to a change for licence at the cinema, with a Superman reboot in the works and a new Batman film in production.
