Destiny microtransactions selling strong on PSN

Their announcement may have been greeted with criticism, but players seem to be voting with their wallets and backing the content.

VentureBeat reports that the game’s Silver currency, which is purchased with real cash, has hit the top five of the Paid Add-Ons sales charts for PSN in the US.

The $19.99 2,000 Silver bundle and $9.99 1,000 Silver bundles stand at No.2 and No.3 respectively in the rankings, with Destiny’s The Taken King expansion itself claiming the top spot. The $4.99 500 Silver bundle is at No.10 in the charts.

[Destiny] is one of the biggest titles of the year and the fact that [microtransactions are] working well for a group of customers and a group of players, tells you also that the industry as a whole and consumers are shifting preferences,” SuperData Research CEO Joost Van Dreunen told the site.

Activision revealed earlier this week that its quarterly digital revenue has soared 38 per cent year-on-year to $629m, accounting for 67 per cent of the company’s total.

Destiny’s microtransactions were revealed in in October, leading to plenty of cynicism online. Developer Bungie has insisted that performance-enhancing perks will never form part of the offer, with purchases instead limited to cosmetic additions.
