Disney talks up Marvel opportunities

Despite Disney trimming investment in high-end console projects, the firm’s CEO recognises that its newly-owned Marvel empire is well-suited to the Xbox 360 and PS3 audiences.

CEO Bob Iger said yesterday that Disney Interactive would be very, very judicious” in how many high-end console projects it will green-light, focusing instead on more casual platforms such as the Wii and DS.

However, with Disney having just acquired Marvel Entertainment in a $4.3 billion deal, the firm is likely to leverage the comic brand’s recognisable IPs.

We have some interesting opportunities with Marvel,” said Iger, and that would be a brand that we think would do extremely well on the higher end consoles.”

Iger added that around 80 per cent of the company’s total game output would be Disney branded, and went on to claim that Apple’s new iPad may be a defining platform for the company.

We think [the iPad] could be a game changer in terms of enabling us to create essentially new forms of content,” he said.

Obviously it will be a great device to play games on and to watch videos because of the clarity of the screen. But the interactivity that it will allow on a portable device with such a high quality screen is going to enable us to really start developing products that is different than the product that you typically see on an internet connected computer or on a television set.”
