Atari has confirmed that Reflections Interactive is working on the fourth instalment of the Driver series for release in early 2006 on PS2, Xbox and PC.

The franchise has so far sold over 11 million units worldwide. This new title is set to take place in a recreation of New York City and features an open mission structure based around a central storyline. Online play has been confirmed for the console versions – a first for the genre.

“The approach, style and gameplay of the original Driver game spawned a multi-million selling global video game franchise that set the pace for the action driving genre explosion of recent times,” said Atari Europe marketing director Cyril Voiron.

“For the return of the franchise that started it all, we are focusing on the key qualities that attract millions of fans to the Driver brand and make it the success that it is.”
