DS breaks 10m mark in Europe

The system sold 1.7 million units in the territory in December alone, ensuring that it comfortably ended 2006 as the best-selling console in the territory.

European marketing director for Nintendo Laurent Fischer said:

“This landmark figure of ten million Nintendo DS gamers cements the console’s position as undisputed leader of the handheld market, bringing gaming to a whole new audience - something that was unimaginable a few years ago.

“DS topped the six million mark in September and has continued to go from strength to strength with thousands of new people being introduced to gaming through the Nintendo DS.  Its appeal to both gamers and non-gamers means it has expanded the gaming population significantly. The innovative Nintendo DS is now helping to shape the whole market with sales of DS console and games being the main drivers behind recent market growth all across Europe.”

Nintendo is hopeful that major new DS software will draw even more consumers to the console. The platform holder’s own Mario Slam Basketball and StarFox Command, as well as Square Enix’s Final Fantasy III, are all due for release in 2007.
