DS claims all-time US crown

Platform holder Nintendo has confirmed the total lifetime sales for both DS and Wii in the US.

Since going on sale in November 2004 the DS has gone on to sell a total of 47m units in the territory, making it the best selling handheld console in US history. Its closest competitor, the PS2, has sold 50m units across the while of North America.

In addition, the Wii has now reached 34m units sold in the US. In 2010 the Wii also sold 7m units for the third consecutive year on the market, making it the first machine to achieve the feat.

However, the performance of Nintendo’s hardware duo in the UK last year remains uncertain following the omission of any sales data for either Wii or DS in UKIE’s annual review.

"When we look back at 2010, we see consumers time and again turning to the value and enjoyment of our products," NoA president Reggie Fils-Aime stated. "When we look ahead to 2011, we see new portable technology and more great Wii games that need to be seen to be believed."

In January last year the DS became Europe’s most successful ever console with sales of 40m units.
