Fiveight launches Mission Iraq campaign without Turtle Beach

Fiveight launches Mission Iraq campaign without Turtle Beach

Late last year, Fiveight, New Zealand distributor of Turtle Beach, sent a gamer to Iraq as part of a marketing campaign.

The goal of the exercise was to take the gamer from Turkey across the border into Iraq and film the whole thing, asking him to compare the sounds of live fire in a real warzone to the experience he found on the headsets.

The controversial campaign then took some flak and received complaints, eventually resulting in Turtle Beach backing away from the project entirely and asserting that the idea did not come from them, but from distributor Fiveight.

Fiveight has since gone on to complete the campaign anyway, and the three webisodes are now available on YouTube.

Whether you call it a stunt, cop-out, bold move or reality check, the Mission Iraq campaign has certainly stirred up a lot of noise.

It's not often that a campaign with as heated a response as this sees one company bow out while the other plows on, but after watching all three episodes, it's clear that the results will only divide people further.

Regardless, it's worth checking out the full playlist here and seeing where many people consider the line to be for tasteful marketing these days.
