Football Manager outflanks opposition

The UK’s obsession with all things football continues this week with one sports sim, EA’s multi-format FIFA 08, being dislodged by another, Sega’s Football Manager 2008, at the top of the ChartTrack All Formats UK Top 40.

It’s Sega’s first number one since the release of last year’s Football Manager, and the publisher manages to capture 38 per cent of all PC software sales this week. In fact, combined with developer Sports Interactive’s previous Championship Manager games, the series now accounts for seven of the top ten biggest selling launch weeks of all time on the format.

Elsewhere in the charts, EA’s The Orange Box, which includes Half-Life 2, and subsequent updates, Portal and Team Fortress 2, debuts in third spot, one place ahead of Nintendo’s critically celebrated DS title The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Other new entries in the Top 40 include Disney’s High School Musical: Makin’ the Cut in 18th and Activision’s Spider-Man: Friend or Foe in 39th. Rockstar’s Table Tennis re-enters the charts in 36th thanks to the release of the Wii version.
