Free to Play documentary garners 5.5m viewers on opening weekend

Dota 2 documentary Free to Play had over 5.5m viewers over this past weekend, according to Valve.

The company revealed the figure in a statement released this week, further claiming the numbers make it “one of the largest debuts of any documentary film.”

Free to Play – created internally at Valve – provides a look into the lives of three professional gamers from completely different backgrounds, as they work toward competing for the $1m prize in Valve's eSports tournament The International.

The documentary released last week through several digital distributors including iTunes, YouTube, Twitch, and Valve's own Steam platform.
