Funcom’s Q2 2012 financial report reveals its MMO The Secret World has sold 200,000 units since its launch in July.
Mixed reviews and competing titles were blamed for the lower than expected results, affecting sales ‘significantly’ according to the company.
Fumcom mentioned the release date announcements for Guild Wars 2 as well as Mists of Pandaria were a case of bad timing, coming just weeks ahead of The Secret World’s launch.
While the company will seek to acquire more players for the MMO, the plan is to refocus its development staff on ‘smaller, more focused’ online games that will require less of an investment in time and money.
“The Company will concentrate its new development on more focused, systems-driven games that have a high degree of community and player interaction,” read the financial statement. “These games require less time and development cost to bring to market.”
Revenues for the firm during Q2 were $2.6m, down from the $3.1m earned during Q2 2011.
