In line with many of its retail contemporaries, online sales were the strongest performer of all, the firm citing a “well documented shift” toward Internet shopping among consumers.
Woolworths chief executive Trevor Bish-Jones was pragmatic in assessing his company’s overall trading situation. “By taking early costs, keeping stocks under control and carefully balancing sales and margin we have turned in a satisfactory performance on our key trading period,” he commented.
“In the coming year we believe the retail environment will be challenging through a combination of weak consumer demand and rising costs such as rents and energy.”
