The firm’s top-selling title of the period was Pro Evolution Soccer 6, followed by Football Manager 2006 and Gears Of War.
“Sales were fantastic throughout November and December with nearly every games product exceeding our sales forecasts,” head of games at Play.com Gian Luzio told MCV. “The first week of December was the mad rush. We were shipping over 100,000 games a day.”
Monday December 11th was Play’s busiest ever business day on all products. The firm took 600 orders a minute – ten every second. Nearly 350,000 customers ordered items during their lunch hour, with a further 320,000 shoppers visiting the site between the hours of 7 and 9pm.
“Play.com saw particularly high growth in the more expensive products like consoles and flat screen televisions as well as items that are more family orientated,” said Luzio. “We were particularly impressed by the Xbox 360 hardware sales, driven by a great ad campaign and the superb Gears of War, so hats off to Microsoft.”
“Last year’s sales were great, but this year has been outstanding,” added a Play.com spokesperson. “More and more people are getting access to the internet at home and consumers are finding out the benefits of shopping online very quickly.
“In previous years the busiest time by far was lunchtime when people accessed the internet from their office, but this year we have seen a marked increase in the number of people shopping in the evening.”
