GTA ads slapped with pre-watershed ban

By Johnny Minkley
Two commercials for Rockstar’s controversial ‘18’-rated PS2 title drew complaints, with the ASA describing one as depicting "general scenes of violence and the use of guns,” and the other the “use of guns in drive-by shootings.” The ads were said to have aired as early as 1830 GMT.

The ASA issued the following statement: “We could understand the parents’ concerns that it was inappropriate for young children to see this level of violence in advertising for a product which was only available to adults.

"The advertising was shown in breaks around programmes which, although not designed specifically for children, were considered to be acceptable family viewing."

All ads for the game have now been banned from screening before 2100 GMT.
