Japan to get PS4 in February 2014; still no news on India

In a clear shift in regional priorities, Sony announced today that it will launch the PlayStation 4 in Japan on 22nd February 2014, three months after it arrives in North America and Europe.

By contrast, the PS3 was first released in Japan, a few days later in North America, and it was Europe that had to endure a three-month wait.

The console will be available with and without the PS Eye camera in Japan, and will be priced 38,980 Yen (Rs 25,400 approx) for the former and 43,980 (Rs 28,800 approx) for the latter. At launch, all PS4 consoles will be bundled with a digital copy of Knack and will include one year of extended warranty.

Indians shouldn’t read too much into the Japanese date, however, as India falls under the purview of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, and not Asia/Japan.

It’s likely the PS4 will launch in India between the European (29th November) and Japanese release dates. Sony has said that a separate announcement regarding a PS4 release date will be made for India and the Middle East.
