Kickstarter opens up for Canadian-based projects

Kickstarter has welcomed in a new region to its ranks, allowing developers in Canada to create and run campaigns on the crowdfunding site.

Canada joins the UK and US as territories that can take advantage of the site’s services. Canadian creators must be a permanent resident in one of the country’s provinces or territories, have access to a Canadian bank account, government-issued ID, and "a major Canadian” credit card.

Speaking to CTV News, Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler explained that the company has long wanted to move into other regions such as Canada – citing regulatory red tape as the major issue slowing Kickstarter’s expansion into other countries.

"It's not specific to Canada. We have a very unique model. People are only charged if funding goals are met," Strickler said.

"As we expand into other countries, there's just a lot of work that has to go into place."

As of earlier today, more than 3,000 Canadian-based projects have launched campaigns seeking funding.
