Microsoft has celebrated Kinect’s first birthday this week by announcing lifetime sales of 10m units for the device.
There’s a flip-side to the news, however. Kinect sold a record-breaking 8m units in its first 60 days on sale. In the 10 months that have followed it has managed to shift just a quarter of that number again.
In celebration of the milestone Microsoft has released a video entitled ‘The Kinect Effect’, which can be viewed below.
Something amazing has happened,” it proclaims. The world has started to think of things we hadn’t even thought of. Unexpected things. Helpful things. Beautiful things. Inspired things. Which is why even though the world keeps asking us what we’re going to do with Kinect next, we’re just as excited to ask the world the same thing.”
The video will star as part of the current Kinect marketing drive – Microsoft’s biggest ever in the UK – and be placed in a number of high-visibility spots, most notable of which is during ITV’s X-Factor.
Microsoft has also announced that it will officially launch a Kinect for Windows commercial program early next year. The idea is that it will give businesses and individuals the chance to broaden the scope of the camera’s applications in the real world.
