Mass Effect 3 gets Black Swan composer

Black Swan composer Clint Mansell has joined BioWare to write the musical score for Mass Effect 3.

The musician revealed the news in an interview with The Quietus.

With something like Mass Effect you’re more like a DJ with all these musical elements,” he said.

You’ve got the holding pattern, then the big explosion where you need the score to kick in. Then you need to take it off on a tangent.

You’ve got all these different elements that change depending on what the player does. You have to figure out an overall symphony, but be able to break it down into component parts. You can bring the pain when required.”

Mass Effect 1 and 2 composer Jack Wall explained his departure from the series to Eurogamer.

I have had a great relationship with the folks at BioWare having done three games with them,” Wall said. We’re all still very good friends.

It was just time to move on. I’m working on some exciting projects and look forward to when I can announce them, but also very much wish the dev team at BioWare all the best on Mass Effect 3.”

Mansell has written the score for movies such as Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, Moon and Black Swan, while Wall has worked on Myst III, Jade Empire and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow.

EA’s Mass Effect 3 is due for release this Q4 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
