Medal of Honor sells 2m

EA has revealed solid sales numbers for its resurrection of the Medal of Honor franchise, with the game having shifted 2m copies since its release last month.

The game has exceeded our plan and expectations – sell-through and sell-in,” EA boss John Riccitiello told investors last night.

It is an absolutely clear success on a business front. Consumer feedback has been strong, suggesting we’ve got a franchise now that we can successfully sequel in the future. I think it’s the first step for this franchise back into the marketplace.”

The comments, which refer exclusively to its commercial performance, are in stark contrast to those made by EA executive Patrick Soderlund, who said yesterday that, in development terms at least, the game didn’t meet our quality expectations”.

EA’s star software performer in the quarter ending September 30th was FIFA 11. The game sold 8m units in the period, taking the series, total unit sales to an astonishing 100m worldwide.

Also strong is Battlefield: Bad Company 2, with sales reaching 6m units. A Vietnam themed digital expansion for that game is due out before year’s end.

In total EA had six million-selling games in Western markets last quarter – FIFA 11, FIFA 10, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Madden NFL 11, NHL11 and NCAA Football 11.
