Minecraft enters beta

One of 2010’s biggest indie games hits Minecraft has finally exited alpha and officially gone into beta.

The transition brings with it a server-based inventory system, designed to crack down on those who hacked the game to gain unlimited items and, bizarrely, the ability to throw eggs.

As was revealed last week, the change also brings with it a price increase and the end of the free upgrade pledge already enjoyed by current owners. There were also plans to introduce a basic narrative into the game.

Creator Marcus Persson also revealed this week that sales of the game have now passed 800k downloads.
