As many as 25m gamers have played Modern Warfare 2 online since its launch, according to developer Infinity Ward, who made the announcement yesterday on Twitter.
Robert Bowling, director of communications at Infinity Ward said: The 25m users is only made up of those who play the game online, with most on Xbox 360, followed by the PS3 and millions more on PC.”
Modern Warfare 2 was last year’s best-selling video game, with over 12m copies sold worldwide. It achieved record day-one sales of 1.23m units.
Bowling also confirmed details of a new DLC pack for Modern Warfare 2, which will be announced later this week. However the future of the immensely popular war simulation franchise is a little murky.
Publisher Activision Blizzard, owner of Infinity Ward, said last week that a new Call of Duty game is being developed for 2011 and developer Sledgehammer will be working on an action-adventure COD title.
Activision also recently axed two Infinity Ward studio bosses, Vince Zampella and Jason West.
It’s likely three or four new Call of Duty games are in production for release over the next few years, with developer Treyarch confirmed to be working on this year’s game.
