Murdoch swoops for IGN

The deal for the San Francisco-based web firm was put together by newly formed online division Fox Interactive Media, and follows News Corp’s $850 million deal for Intermix Media, owner of myspace.com, and the acquisition of sports web company Scout Media.

IGN’s network of sites, which includes GameSpy, IGN FilmForce, Rotten Tomatoes and male lifestyle site AskMen.com, will increase News Corp’s US web traffic by nearly 70 million, according to the company, and fits in with Murdoch’s expressed desire to increase his company’s online presence.

“With the acquisition of IGN and its 28 million users, we have gone a long way toward achieving two of our key objectives in our efforts to become a leading and profitable Internet presence,” commented Murdoch.
