Need for Speed holds firm through New Year slump

Despite shifting nearly 60 per cent fewer units than last week, greater than the overall chart sales drop of nearly 50 per cent, EA’s dominant racer stays ahead of Ubisoft’s King Kong, which clings to second place in the official ChartTrack listings.

EA’s FIFA 06 holds firm in third whilst yet another EA franchise, The Sims 2, climbs four places to fourth spot, despite selling just over half as many units as last week. Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer 5 spends its third week in fifth spot whilst Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones drops two places to sixth spot.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, EA’s fourth title in the top ten this week, climbs from tenth spot to seventh whilst Take 2’s Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories on PSP falls from sixth to eighth. Meanwhile, Sega’s Shadow the Hedgehog falls two places to No.9 whilst Activision’s Gun slips one place to ten.

PSP seems to be experiencing a Christmas hangover this week with the largest drop in software sales, allowing Xbox to climb back into third place behind PS2 and PC. A glance at the GameCube charts reveals its top-selling title for the week, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, shifting less than a meagre 750 units.
