New Mortal Kombat film in the works

New Line Cinema has teamed up with Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment to produce a new Mortal Kombat film due in 2013.

Los Angeles Times reports that Warner’s New Line Cinema label is aiming to produce the film next year.

It’s really important that we show we can bring our game properties to movies instead of just the other way around," said Warner Home Entertainment president Kevin Tsujihara.

The new game and the online shorts prompted us to consider a reboot of a brand we hadn’t been actively thinking about.”

In 2010 Kevin Tancharoen produced a short film based on Mortal Kombat which became an internet hit, prompting the backing of Warner and the approval for him to produce a web series.

Tancharoen will direct the new film which is expected to cost less than $100m to produce.

The first two Mortal Kombat films arrived in 1995 and 1997.
