Developer id Software has scrapped its earlier work on Doom 4 to work on a new version” of the game, publisher Bethesda has revealed.
Several reports in late 2011 had suggested that work on Doom 4 had been halted indefinitely, but it now appears that id had scrapped that project and begun from scratch.
"An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect," Bethesda PR and marketing head Pete Hines said.
"As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know,” Hines added.
Bethesda gave no indication of when Doom 4 will arrive, but it would be safe to assume that it is now a next-gen title.
