New roles for key marketing execs

Some highly regarded and popular names in games marketing and PR have taken up new roles.

Activision’s senior brand manager Gary Sims – who has worked on Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk and Blur, has left the publisher to join toy specialist Hasbro. In his new role Sims will be working on Transformers and Marvel products.

“I am really excited with this new role and looking forward to working with some of my favourite brands from my youth,” commented Sims.

Also leaving the games industry this week is Neil Handa, who has moved from his most recent position as head of marketing at Gem Distribution to become marketing manager at Apple distributor Computers Unlimited.

Handa was at Gem for eight years, and will help develop CU’s marketing strategy.

Elsewhere, former Sega UK marketing manager Jo Fawell has joined Sony Computer Entertainment Europe as partnership marketing manager.

Fawell returns to SCEE having previously worked for the platform holder between 1999 and 2004.

She has also held marketing roles at Empire Interactive and Vivendi Games before joining Sega in 2008.

“I am delighted to be a part of PlayStation. This is an excellent opportunity to work on exciting aspects of the business such as sponsorships, in-game advertising and
third-party marketing support,” said Fawell.

Finally, Laura West has moved on from Barrington Harvey to become associate director at Champion Communications.

Her new clients include Buffalo Technology and Kidsco TV, but she will also work to secure new clients from the games industry. Whilst at Barrington Harvey, she worked with Nintendo, Codemasters, ELSPA, 2K Games and Jagex.

Champion Communictations director Richard Cook, said: “We are delighted to have Laura join our team. Champion’s focus on digital, media and technology brands will be supported and complemented by Laura’s background and skillset.”

West added: “With seven years of games PR experience under my belt I can also bring the magic Champion has to offer to the games industry going forward.”
