New World of Warcraft expansion shifts 2.7m copies

Mists of Pandaria – the latest expansion pack in the World of Warcraft series has sold 2.7m copies worldwide.

The PC add-on has also boosted the game’s subscriber numbers, up over 10m users worldwide, the firm says. World of Warcraft has seen a steep drop in subscribers over the last 18 months, but it is still comfortably the biggest subscription-based MMO on the market.

Mists of Pandaria was launched worldwide on September 25th, and the numbers are for the title’s first week of sales only. The product will have received another boost from its Chinese release on October 2nd.

"With Mists of Pandaria, we set out to expand on the sense of fun and discovery that’s always been at the heart of World of Warcraft—in addition to adding a huge variety of new content and features to the game," said Blizzard CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime.

"It’s been gratifying to see the results of all of the work we put into this expansion and to hear all of the positive feedback from players so far."
