Newbee pockets $5m after winning Dota 2 International

Chinese esports team Newbee have won this year’s Dota 2 International.

In doing so the five-man team earned a whopping prize fund of over $5m (£2.9m).

For comparison, that compares to a winner’s payout of £1.76m/$3m for the 2014 Wimbledon tennis champion, £937k/$1.66m for the British Open golf winner, £560k/$957k for winning the UK Grand National horse race and £300k/$512k for the winner of the World Snooker Championship.

The Dota 2 International final saw them square off against ViCi, who impressed earlier in the tournament despite losing to NewBee. ViCi got off to a winning start in the final face-off, although NewBee regained their composure to once again get the better of their rivals, winning 3-1 overall.
The winners in full are as follows:

1st – Newbee
2nd – ViCi
3rd – Evil Geniuses
4th – DK
5th – Cloud 9
6th – LGD Gaming
=7th – Invictus Gaming
=7th – Natus Vincere
