Nintendo losses jump despite 2.82m Mario Kart 8 sales and Wii U boost sales

Q1 has delivered mixed fortunes for the struggling Nintendo.

On the positive side Mario Kart 8 has sold 2.82m copies in just over a month, representing an attach rate of over 40 per cent among Wii U oners.

And in the quarter ending June 30th Nintendo sold 510k Wii U consoles – that’s over three times the 160k it sold in the same period a year before.

Yet none of this prevented the Kyoto firm suffering severe dips year-on-year. It posted a 9.92bn operating loss for the period – a stark reversal of the 8.6bn profit registered in the same period a year before and double the amount predicted by analysts.

Worryingly, 3DS sales for the period fell 41 per cent from 1.4m last year to 820k.

The company, which is not shy of sticking by ambitious forecasts, still predicts that it will end the year with net profit of 20bn – a number that vastly exceeds the expectations of analysts – saying it will sell 3.6m Wii U consoles and 12m 3DS units in the period.
