Nintendo Blogger claims that following Nintendo’s deal with online games firm GameSpy, the company has admitted: "GameSpy's technology does allow for features that could span multiple games. With the Nintendo Wii, however, the multiplayer features are title-specific. For the Wii, friend lists are game specific.”
Using individual friend codes does allow for a greater level of online security, but also adds a level of inconvenience.
