MCV understands that, by the end of January, the US installed base for PS2 was 30.5m units. It is this huge number which contributed to the damages award of $90.7m, which followed a Californian court’s judgement that touch technology outfit Immersion Corporation had been infringed by Sony’s Dual Shock vibration feature.
Total PAL sales of PS2 hardware had reached 28.8m by the end of January. But monthly sales trends since then mean that the US could be overtaken later this year.
Global sales of the PlayStation 2, inclusive of the 17m sold in Japan by the end of January, are now comfortably on their way towards 80m. Global sales of the original PlayStation are over 100m.
