Now Sony claims global Move 4.1m milestone

The two-month headstart has paid off for Sony as worldwide PlayStation Move sales top 4.1 million units.

With Microsoft’s cry of 2.5m Kinect sales still ringing in the industry’s ears, Sony has announced its own motion controller has reached this sales milestone in just two months.

This number not only shows clear success of the launch of the new motion sensing controller but also indicates positive momentum going into the holiday season and to the year 2011,” said the firm in a statement.

Move was released in North America, Asia, Europe and PAL territories in September, with the Japanese release following in October.

There are more than 25 Move-compatible games already available in Europe and the UK, with key releases such as Killzone 3 and LittleBigPlanet 2 due on shelves early next year.

UPDATE: When Sony announced its first set of sales numbers for Move it transpired in the following days that it’s numbers referred to the number of Move controller shipped to retail, not purchased by consumers.

It seems that the same thing has happened here.

Speaking to Joystiq, a Sony rep confirmed that the number given is for devices shipped, adding: "While we don’t disclose our exact sell-through number, the key is that our retailers continue to ask for more Move units and are taking every unit we can supply them with based on their sales."
