NPD: US digital sales spike during Q3

The NPD Group has released a Q3 report for digital sales in the US, revealing the growing portion of the market accounted for $1.4bn during the period.

The total counts sales from full game and add-on content downloads, mobile and social games, and subscriptions, which added to new and used retail sales during the period brings the overall consumer spend to $2.87bn for the quarter.

The figure represents a 22 per cent year-over-year increase in total digital spending as well.

When including overall consumer content spending across both digital and physical formats in Q3 2012, there was a positive story for the industry,” NPD analyst Liam Callahan said.

Despite declines in physical format spending of 16 percent from Q3 2011, strong growth in digital format spending, up 22 percent, helped offset this decline and led to 1 percent decline in content spending from the same quarter last year. Mobile App spending, digital full game downloads, and downloadable add-on content were the areas within digital format spending that helped drive this increase.”
