NPD: Wii Play passes 10m US sales

Having once again bossed the North American games market in what was another record-breaking month in February, Nintendo has revealed that Wii Play has now sold over 10m units in the territory.

Sales of the Wii hit 753,000 in February, an increase of 74 per cent year-on-year. DS sold an additional 588,000 units. Lifetime sales of each system in north America stand at 19m and 29m respectively.

Wii Play mini-games are fun and they get people playing together,” Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway stated.

Even if you believe people are buying Wii Play solely for the controller, that indicates that there are now more than 10m people who have an extra Wii Remote controller in their homes.

When added to the 12.7m Wii Remote controllers that have sold separately, this reinforces the growing social gaming trend we have been seeing where friends and family use their Wii games as a social hub – both in person and online.”
