Oculus acquires RakNet, unveils Oculus Connect 2014

Oculus VR has made a pair of announcements today, as the company has both acquired RakNet and revealed its own Oculus Connect conference for September.

A post on the Oculus blog explains that RakNet – a C++ networking middleware system for game development – will provide Oculus Rift developers the essentials for implementing online multiplayer, such as object replication and online chat.

Oculus Connect 2014 takes place in Hollywood, California September 19th and 20th. Registration begins this Thursday, July 10th.

The conference will feature keynotes from Oculus founder Palmer Lucky, CEO Brendan Iribe, along with relative newcomers Michael Abrash and John Carmack. Other sessions and workshops organized by “Oculus engineers and industry pioneers” will be on tap as well.

The announcements follow word that Oculus Rift dev kit 2 has begun shipping to pre-order customers.
