OnLive relaunches with two new business models

Cloud gaming specialist OnLive has relaunched itself with two major new business models that it believes will finally win over gamers.

The firm’s new management team have added two new services, the first of which is called CloudLift. The concept is that gamers – for £9.99 a month – can stream their PC games that they have already downloaded (or bought from a shop) to other devices, including TVs, laptops, Macs and tablets.

So gamers can play their game on their PC and then continue playing on a smart TV or tablet elsewhere.

The service works by linking the player’s game library with his or her OnLive account and syncing saves automatically.

The first publishers to sign up includes Codemasters, Warner Bros and Deep Silver with Saints Row IV, F1 2013 and The LEGO Movie Videogame amongst the first titles.

The second service is called OnLive Go. This service targets MMOs and Virtual Worlds that take a long time to download, offering consumers faster access to the game while it downloads in the background. OnLive has already partnered with Linden Labs’ SecondLife and Gaijin’s Warthunder.

OnLive will continue to use its PlayPack subscription option, where gamers can access over 250 games for £6.99 a month.

“OnLive has continued to innovate in its technology and its business models,” said OnLive’s biggest investor Gary Lauder.

“With our new CloudLift service, and other exciting offerings in the works, we have created a win for all parties: gamers, publishers, digital distributors and OnLive. We’re defining a roadmap that keeps OnLive at the forefront of cloud gaming and cloud computing.”

OnLive says it has launched a series of new upgrades to its service and has added new servers to improve performance.
