OPINION: The MCV Awards

So where was the MCV Award for Activision? After the success of Black Ops, the team from Stockley Park were bound to go home with something shiny, right?

Nope. These days, even publishing the biggest selling game doesn’t guarantee anything. And that just about sums up where the games business is right now.

For the record, Activision came very close, and it was certainly not the only big company to miss out on the night.

Not winning perhaps reveals the difficulty it had last year with some other titles, or the over-achievement of Red Dead.

Microsoft winning three and EA winning publisher of the year nods towards these two being considered two of the strongest performers of the last 12 months.

Nintendo, meanwhile, has worked hard to be creative and innovative in a challenging environment. Whilst not as dominant as before, Sales Team and Marketing Team is still a momentous haul.

GAME, Amazon, ShopTo and HMV’s luscious new 150 Oxford Street were rightful winners, whilst Gioteck has arrived with one hell of a bang in the peripherals space.

Congrats too to Codemasters for that F1 miracle, Sega for staking a claim in the UK digital market and, of course, Gem for winning back the distribution crown after a fabulous year with Xbox, Take-Two and Ubi.

The MCV Judging panel was 72-strong and our process again as transparent as a Ronaldo dive. We list them all below. And no they can’t vote for themselves.

The biggest cheer of the night went to Ubisoft.

The Grand Prix winner has delivered success after success in the UK and has a team to be proud of. Next stop E3…
