Play Arts Metal Gear Solid V figure unlikely to quell eroticism concerns

A photo of an upcoming Play Arts Metal Gear Solid figurine has reignited the ‘eroticism’ debate sparked off by Hideo Kojima last September.

The pic, of the Play Arts take on Metal Gear Solid V’s Quiet, shows that the character has certainly not been toned down since details of her design were highlighted by the famed developer last year.

Kojima was credited at the time as saying: I’ve been ordering [fellow designer] Yoji to make the character more erotic, and he did it well. Recently I’ve been making characters this way. I create the setting thoroughly, how he/she spent early life, name, style, favourite phrase, fashion, action to stand the character out. The initial target is to make u want to do cosplay or its figurine to sell well.”

The following day Kojima tried to correct the statement, although it’s debatable whether the subsequent comments helped.

"Maybe the phrase ‘erotic’ wasn’t really [the correct word for] what I was trying to say," he added. "What I’m really trying to do is create unique characters. One of those is, of course, Quiet. She’s a really unique character, I wanted to add that sexiness to her. It wasn’t really supposed to be erotic, but sexy.”

Yoji also argued that sexiness is a thing the team strives through in all elements of design, from characters to weapons and vehicles.

If nothing else it’s certainly likely that Quiet’s design will help sell the figure.
