Play TV going 3D

Another major string in PS3’s 3D bow will arrive later this year when the console’s Play TV peripheral – a device that plugs into the console and turns it into a personal TV recorder – gets a 3D update.

Whether or not the update will arrive as part of the still mysterious Play TV 2 remains unclear.

CVG quotes SCEE senior director Mick Hocking stated: You’ll see 3D games in the next 12 months, you’ll see Blu-ray movies in 3D, and as soon as the broadcast starts through our PlayTV services, you’re going to watch 3D content on it.

And as you start taking 3D pictures of your family or 3D camcorder movies you can play those back on PS3, too.”

Though the PS3 is already able to play 3D games (provided it has been updated with the latest firmware) it’s not yet able to play 3D movies on Blu-ray – that functionality will arrive later in the year.
