It’s never had the credit it deserved for its success, but Sony has nonetheless decided to revisit its PlayStation Home concept with a brand new redesign.
Having lost much of its user base to the rising online social games sector, Sony has said that it now intends to relaunch Home as a console hub for social gaming.
“This is a giant leap in the evolution of the platform,” PlayStation Home director Jack Buser told VentureBeat.
“We are going to ‘up level’ games as the heart of PlayStation Home. This means that Home itself is going to become a game. The first things you see when you get into Home are games.”
The advantage this new Home will have over the likes of Facebook, Sony contends, is that it can offer “a more intense experience” that can “keep users engaged for longer”.
Home’s central Home plaza will be replaced with a futuristic transit station called The Hub, which integrates games, quests and user-generated content. All of Home’s content will be quickly accessible from this central area
The new Home is due to arrive in autumn.
