PopCap console games head to retail

Some of PopCap’s most popular casual games are making their way to UK retailers thanks to Mastertronic.

The titles will arrive as boxed releases on Xbox 360 and DS for the first time in Europe, with Mastertronic responsible for publishing and distributing the titles.

PopCap Hits – which includes Bejeweled 2, Peggle, Feeding Frenzy and Astro Pop – hits shelves on February 18th, while PopCap Hits Vol.2 arrives in March.

The latter consists of Plants vs Zombies, Zuma, Feeding Frenzy 2 and Heavy Weapons. Both compilations are exclusive to Xbox 360.

Bejeweled Blitz, Plants vs Zombies Game of the Year Edition and Amazing Adventures: The Caribbean Secret will also be released on PC in February, followed by a DS version of Plants vs Zombies in March.

To date, digital was the main avenue to exploit these record-breaking titles,” Mastertronic’s business development director Garry Williams told MCV.

The success of Wii and Kinect has shown that there is a new raft of consumers that value these casual and playable family releases. Our job is to use our existing publishing agreements on all the major platforms to help PopCap get these sure-fire hits into retail on as many formats as possible.”

Senior director of PopCap’s business development for EMEA Mark Cochrane added:

Our core business is to make great games that everyone, anywhere, can play. We are delighted to partner with Mastertronic to bring our console games to retail in Europe.”

PopCap previously released a range of PC games at retail. The US developer has sold millions of copies of its games digitally on PCs, Macs, the iTunes App Store, Xbox Live and more.
