PS3 market share hits 31%

It’s a big ask, but it’s possible that Sony’s PS3 could just catch Xbox 360 in terms of total global sales by the end of the 2010 – that’s according to a new report from Strategy Analytics, as reported by Industry Gamers.

It claims that as of Q1 2010, the PS3’s global market share stands at 31 per cent. Furthermore, it predicts total PS3 sales in 2010 to hit 14m – 3.5m units ahead of Xbox 360’s forecasted sales of 10.5m units.

Wii sales are still predicted to lead the race, however, hitting 17.5m.

If the numbers are correct we would enter 2011 with PS3 ever so slightly behind Xbox 360 in terms of total sales, and positioned to overtake it in 2011.

Our analysis shows that while Wii sales fell relative to Q109, its share in fact remained constant relative to Q409,” principal analyst David Mercer stated. The main movement in Q1 2010 was the growing share for Sony’s PS3, at the expense of Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

The PS3 continues to benefit from the price cut last September. This should help the PS3 maintain growth momentum throughout 2010. The introduction of the Natal technology should also help re-energize Microsoft’s Xbox 360 platform in the second half of the year.”

The positive forecast follows MCV’s confirmation earlier today that UK sales of both PS3 hardware and software are currently up year-on-year.
