PS4 outsells Xbox One for 7th consecutive month in US

NPD’s July 2014 report reveals Sony’s console has once again topped the US hardware monthly charts, while The Last of Us (both the original and Remastered versions) drove software sales.

Software results were particularly weak during the period, thanks to the absence of annual sales-driver NCAA Football.

"July is typically a quiet month for software sales, representing about 5 percent of annual sales,” NPD’s Liam Callahan said. "Typically, NCAA Football launches in July and often ranks as the top game. As that title is no longer being produced, new launch sales declined steeply by close to 70 percent in July 2014."

Still, strong hardware sales offset the significant decline in software sales enough for a year-on-year increase in total revenue compared to July 2013.

It’s also worth noting that NPD’s figures do not take into account several older titles that sold well during the period – including Pokemon X & Y, Mario Kart 7 and Tomodachi Life.
