Rage heading to iPhone

John Carmack, the co-founder and technical director of id Software, has confirmed that his studio’s upcoming first person shooter Rage will be released on iPhone.

The game has already been announced on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC and, thanks to a delay, will now be released some time in 2011.

The new version for Apple’s device runs at an impressive 60fps and is said to be graphically superior to anything possible on machines such as the PS2 or original Xbox.

The game was shown running on an iPhone 4 but it’s thought that id’s tech, which is based on the coding principle of megatextures, could still run impressively on even an iPhone 3G.

Carmack added that a smaller Rage-based title which he described as a show off” game) would be released first and would then be followed by a full iPhone game to coincide with the console and PC releases.

At E3 2008 EA announced that it was to publish Rage, but in December last year it was confirmed that publishing rights had moved to Bethesda.
