Razer unveils $400 VR headset

Peripherals specialist Razer has revealed its second VR headset.

Dubbed The Hacker Development Kit 2.0 (or HDK 2.0 for short), this is a $400 piece of kit that’s set for a July release, according to GamesBeat. The hardware uses Razer’s VR operating system, the imaginatively called OSVR.

Razer claims that HDK 2.0 is of a quality comparable to the $600 Oculus Rift or $800 HTC Vive.

At the start of 2015, Razer rolled out its virtual reality initiative, with both its OSVR software and its HDK hardware.

The HDK 2 allows us to meet the needs of VR fans and gamers and provide developers with affordable open-source hardware to innovate with,” said Razer’s OSVR boss, Christopher Mitchel.

With the HDK 2 being able to deliver a visual experience on par with industry leaders, we will now be able to represent hardware agnostic VR media and games in all their glory for future headsets to adopt through the open source ecosystem.”
