Ridge Racer was the strongest performer, knocking Codemasters’ Brian Lara International Cricket 2005 down to number two, with PSP titles making up the rest of the top 10, including WipEout Pure at number three, Sega’s Virtua Tennis at four and Konami’s Metal Gear Acid in at five.
The anticipated handheld, which launched last Thursday (September 1st), was boosted by hundreds of midnight store openings nationwide, with many outlets reporting a sell-out as punters snapped up the limited units available which had not been pre-ordered.
According to official data for the week ending September 3rd, PSP outsold rival portable Nintendo DS by a factor of approximately 40 to one, and Game Boy Advance SP by 30 to one.
